ECP Refuses to Recognise Barrister Gohar as PTI Chairman

Commission cites pending intra-party case and stay order from LHC.

ISLAMABAD — The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has formally refused to recognise Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), citing unresolved intra-party election issues and an active stay order from the Lahore High Court.

What Did the ECP Decide?

In its official response, the ECP stated that:

  • Barrister Gohar cannot be acknowledged as PTI chairman,
  • He holds no authority to include independent senators in the party,
  • And the intra-party election case remains pending, making any structural changes invalid for the time being.

The Commission also pointed out that PTI itself had sought and received a stay order from the Lahore High Court, further complicating the matter.

When Was the Request Made?

Gohar had written to the Election Commission on November 13, requesting that independent senators who joined PTI after Senate elections be formally included in the party roster.
The ECP’s reply dated November 26 rejected this request.

How Did Gohar Respond?

Speaking to SAMAA, Barrister Gohar confirmed he had received the ECP’s response and vowed to challenge it legally.

“The Election Commission has not yet recognized our intra-party election nor issued a certificate. This is very unfortunate. We will take this matter to court,” he said.

He further argued that the ECP had previously allowed independent senators to join PTI during Senate elections, raising questions about consistency in its decision-making.

Why is PTI’s Status Under Scrutiny?

The controversy arises amid ongoing debate over:

  • PTI’s intra-party election legitimacy
  • Allegations of procedural violations
  • Speculation surrounding a potential ban on PTI

Gohar dismissed talk of a ban, questioning its legal basis:

“If PTI is not a registered party according to the Election Commission, how can it be banned?”

Where Does This Leave PTI?

The rejection intensifies the leadership crisis within PTI, particularly at a time when:

  • Independent senators seek formal affiliation
  • Internal restructuring has been paused due to court orders
  • Political pressure continues to mount from multiple sides

The party is now preparing for a legal battle to challenge the ECP’s position and seek formal recognition of its internal elections.
