KP CM Denied Meeting with Imran Khan for 10th Time Internal PTI Split Widens

Adiala jail rejects another meeting request despite court orders; PTI weighs protest options

For the 10th time, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was denied permission to meet PTI founder Imran Khan at Adiala jail on Thursday. The repeated refusals have triggered fresh tensions within the PTI, deepening disagreements over whether to continue prolonged sit-ins outside the prison.

What Happened? — The 10th Meeting Blocked

Despite possessing court orders allowing the meeting, CM Sohail Afridi was again stopped at the prison gate.
Speaking to reporters, Afridi expressed frustration that an elected chief minister was repeatedly denied access to his party’s founding leader.

The refusal has added pressure on the KP government, which has positioned itself as a defender of Imran Khan’s legal and political rights.

Where Are the Divisions? — PTI Split Over Protest Strategy

Party insiders reveal two sharply divided camps:

1. The “Prolonged Sit-In” Group

Believes that sustained pressure outside Adiala will force the government to ease restrictions and allow access to Imran Khan.

2. The “Token Protest” Group

Warns that extended sit-ins could provide the “powers that be” an excuse to escalate the situation.

One senior PTI leader, requesting anonymity, claimed some fear a possible “false flag situation” such as a blast or staged incident. According to them, this could be used to justify shifting Imran Khan from Adiala jail, presenting it as a security necessity to the international community.

“We don’t want to give the government any excuse,” the leader said.

Why Does This Matter? — Fears of Manipulation and Relocation

Inside the party, there is a growing belief that any chaos outside the jail would be used to:

  • claim an attempted jailbreak
  • accuse PTI of staging a violent protest
  • justify Imran Khan’s relocation to a distant or harsher facility

Such an outcome would weaken PTI’s political leverage and further isolate its incarcerated founder.

How Is PTI Responding? — Leadership Pushes Back

Former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, however, dismissed media reports of internal rifts, insisting the party remains unified.

But insiders say strategic disagreements are real — and growing — as the repeated refusals now carry political, legal, and security consequences.

A Battle of Optics and Pressure

A Chief Minister Kept Out: Symbolism at Play

Blocking an elected CM from meeting his party chief is more than a procedural issue; it reflects the state’s tightening control over PTI’s communication channels.

Protests vs. Restraint: A Double-Edged Choice

Extended sit-ins may demonstrate strength, but they also invite confrontation.
Token protests appear safe but may be seen as symbolic and ineffective.

PTI’s Dilemma

Push too hard — and risk escalation.
Push too softly — and risk irrelevance.

The party’s internal debate highlights a broader reality: PTI is struggling to balance public pressure with the risk of giving authorities a pretext for drastic action.

What Next? — The Stakes Are Rising

With the 10th refusal, the party must now decide:

  • Will it escalate street pressure?
  • Will it shift to legal strategies only?
  • Will internal disagreements intensify?

For now, the situation remains volatile, and any move outside Adiala jail could shape Imran Khan’s detention conditions — and PTI’s political trajectory.
