More than 90,000 vehicles inspected as Punjab expands anti-smog enforcement operations

LAHORE: The Punjab Transport Department has intensified its crackdown on smoke-emitting and unfit vehicles across the province as part of its mission to control smog and improve air quality.

According to a comprehensive report issued by the department, enforcement operations are being carried out in all districts, targeting vehicles, drivers, and transporters found violating environmental safety regulations.

90,000 Vehicles Inspected Across Lahore

The report revealed that more than 90,000 vehicles have been inspected at Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) stations across Lahore this year. Of these, around 55,000 vehicles met the required standards and were issued fitness certificates.

However, thousands of vehicles failed inspection, leading to strict administrative and legal action by the authorities.

Thousands of Violators Penalized

The department’s operations resulted in over 8,000 smoke-emitting vehicles being fined and 5,500 unfit vehicles taken off the road for non-compliance with environmental standards.

Additionally, around 3,500 vehicles were seized for operating without valid fitness certificates.

In an effort to curb overloading — another key cause of emissions and road hazards — 14,000 vehicles were fined for violating load regulations.
Cumulatively, the department imposed fines totaling Rs85 million during the ongoing crackdown.

Legal Action and Arrests

The report further confirmed that 2,200 vehicles have had registered cases for multiple violations, while 1,800 drivers and vehicle owners have been taken into custody for persistent non-compliance.

The enforcement actions reflect the government’s resolve to hold all offenders accountable and protect citizens from the harmful effects of smog.

Minister’s Directive: Zero Tolerance for Pollution

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan has directed officials to maintain a 24-hour crackdown on all smoke-emitting and unfit vehicles without any exceptions.

“No leniency will be shown towards vehicles emitting smoke or operating without valid fitness certificates,”
the minister stated, emphasizing strict and continuous enforcement.

He also urged vehicle owners to play their part by ensuring timely maintenance and proper vehicle repair, warning that negligence would not be tolerated amid worsening air pollution levels.

“To control smog, it is essential that owners repair and maintain their vehicles on time,” he added.

Broader Smog Control Campaign

The crackdown is part of Punjab’s broader environmental protection strategy, launched ahead of the winter season — a period when smog levels rise sharply due to emissions, crop burning, and weather changes.

Provincial authorities have pledged to take every necessary measure to eliminate smog at its root, protecting public health and ensuring compliance with environmental standards across Punjab.
