Financial penalties may apply if contracts are breached without PCB call
Pakistani Players Eye Early Return from Big Bash League
KARACHI: In preparation for the upcoming ICC World Cup, several Pakistani cricketers are considering leaving the Big Bash League (BBL) early to join the national squad for the three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka. A final decision will be made after consultations with the selectors.
Cricket Australia’s CEO, Todd Greenberg, confirmed that despite the scheduled Sri Lanka tour, Pakistani players are contractually available for the entire BBL season, which continues until January 25.
Sri Lanka T20 Series and World Cup Considerations
Pakistan is set to play T20 matches against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on January 7, 10, and 11, 2026, ahead of the World Cup matches starting February 7 at Sri Lankan venues.
Sources indicate that some players have expressed to the national think tank their preference to participate in the Sri Lanka series. They cited the significant difference in pitch conditions between Australia and Sri Lanka and argued that immediately transitioning from Australian conditions to Sri Lankan venues could affect their World Cup performance.
Contractual Concerns and Selector Strategy
When players signed their BBL contracts, the Sri Lanka series had not yet been scheduled. Players also fear that poor performance in the World Cup could attract criticism for prioritizing league commitments over national duty.
Meanwhile, the PCB selectors are reportedly exploring opportunities to test new talent, which may influence whether senior players are recalled from Australia. Players who choose to return unilaterally risk facing financial penalties for breaching their contracts. However, if the PCB officially requests their return, such penalties are waived, as per standard contract provisions.
A final decision regarding player release is expected in the coming days after consultations with both players and selectors.
