Investigators probe possible involvement of Ukrainian special services
A senior Russian military officer was killed on Monday after a car bomb exploded in southern Moscow, Russian authorities confirmed, describing the incident as a targeted attack.
According to investigators, the explosion occurred at approximately 6:55 a.m. Moscow time as Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s army operational training directorate, was leaving a parking area in his vehicle.
The blast reportedly originated beneath the Kia Sorento being driven by the general, causing severe injuries that proved fatal. Russia’s State Investigative Committee confirmed that Sarvarov died as a result of wounds sustained in the explosion.
Investigators released video footage showing the extensively damaged vehicle, with visible bloodstains inside the driver’s seat, underscoring the intensity of the blast.
Authorities stated that multiple scenarios are under investigation. One version being examined is the possible involvement of Ukrainian special services in planting the explosive device. However, no conclusive findings have been announced.
There was no immediate official response from Ukraine regarding the allegation.
The killing marks one of the most high-profile attacks on a Russian military figure inside Moscow in recent months and is expected to further heighten tensions amid the ongoing conflict.
Security agencies have launched a full investigation to determine the perpetrators and circumstances surrounding the bombing.
