Emergency Assistance for Displaced Civilians
China has announced humanitarian assistance worth approximately $2.85 million for Cambodia to support civilians displaced by recent border tensions with Thailand. The aid package is intended to address urgent humanitarian needs and improve living conditions for affected communities.
According to a statement shared on December 28, the first shipment of Chinese assistance has already arrived in Cambodia. The consignment includes essential relief items such as tents, blankets, and food supplies, aimed at providing immediate support to families impacted by the conflict.
China Hosts Tripartite Talks
The humanitarian assistance coincides with tripartite diplomatic talks hosted by China, bringing together representatives from Cambodia, Thailand, and China. These discussions are being held in Yunnan province and include foreign ministers and military officials from both Southeast Asian nations.
Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, his Thai counterpart, and senior military representatives are participating in the dialogue, which focuses on de-escalation, confidence-building, and long-term stability in the border region.
Beijing Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement
The border area has now entered a second consecutive day of calm following the signing of a joint statement on an immediate ceasefire, which came into effect at noon on December 27.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin welcomed the development, emphasizing that China was the first country to extend assistance following the outbreak of tensions and has provided the largest share of humanitarian support so far. He described the aid as a reflection of the deep-rooted friendship and strategic partnership between China and Cambodia.
Commitment to Regional Peace
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated Beijing’s stance on regional stability, stating that peace remains a shared aspiration of the Cambodian and Thai people, as well as a consistent objective of China’s foreign policy.
China has pledged to continue playing a constructive and facilitative role in consolidating the ceasefire, rebuilding mutual trust between the two neighboring countries, and supporting efforts toward durable and lasting peace in the region.
Broader Diplomatic Context
China has increasingly positioned itself as a regional mediator in Southeast Asia, combining humanitarian assistance with diplomatic engagement. Analysts note that such efforts align with Beijing’s broader emphasis on regional stability, non-interference, and conflict resolution through dialogue.
