Venezuelan Incident Threatens Global Stability Warns Khawaja Asif

Khwaja Asif urges political unity, criticises KP government for “playing both sides”

Global Peace at Risk, Says Defence Minister

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday warned that recent developments in Venezuela signal serious danger for global peace, stressing that such incidents could trigger wider international instability if left unchecked.

Speaking during a televised talk show, the defence minister said the unfolding situation reflects a troubling shift in global security dynamics, urging world powers to take the threat seriously.

Call for Talks with PTI Amid Political Deadlock

Turning to domestic politics, Khawaja Asif emphasized that dialogue with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is necessary, but criticised what he described as mixed signals from the party.

He said PTI had expressed a desire to negotiate through figures such as Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Raja Nasir Abbas, yet senior PTI leaders themselves were hesitant to step forward.

“This approach lacks honesty,” Asif remarked, adding that all parties within the PTI-led alliance must be part of any meaningful negotiations.

Negotiations to Be Held with PTI Founder

The defence minister stated that discussions would ultimately be held directly with PTI’s founder, noting uncertainty over the party’s internal stance and warning that PTI could later distance itself from the dialogue process.

He added that decisions taken without clarity and commitment risk derailing political reconciliation efforts.

KP Government Accused of Avoiding Counterterror Operations

Khawaja Asif strongly criticised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, accusing it of avoiding participation in security operations.

He alleged that the provincial government was “playing both sides”, attempting to avoid angering militant elements while simultaneously seeking political gains from the federal government.

“The KP government neither openly supports operations nor clearly opposes terrorism,” he said, calling the approach dangerous for national security.

Support for Army Key to Faster Success

The defence minister stressed that full backing from the KP government and political leadership is essential for the success of ongoing security operations.

“If the KP government stands shoulder to shoulder with the Pakistan Army, operational objectives can be achieved much faster,” he said, urging unity in the fight against terrorism.

Governor’s Rule Remains Sensitive Issue

Commenting on constitutional matters, Khawaja Asif said there were reservations regarding the imposition of governor’s rule, indicating that such steps require careful consideration due to political and legal sensitivities.

Pakistan Must Rise Above Politics

Addressing broader international and national challenges, the defence minister said Pakistan must rise above internal political divisions to safeguard its national interests.

He called on all political forces, particularly the KP government, to stand united with the federal government and armed forces.
