To rebuild trust among stakeholders, the National Dialogue Committee has recommended several confidence-building measures
In a nation locked in political deadlock, a small group is trying to reopen the door to dialogue
Former PTI leaders and politicians from other parties have proposed a framework for political dialogue to reduce Pakistan’s ongoing political tensions.
Dialogue Initiative
The proposal was issued by the National Dialogue Committee (NDC). The NDC was formed by Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail, and Mahmood Moulvi. The group aims to bring the government and opposition to the negotiating table. To begin this process, the NDC held a national conference focused on restoring political engagement.
Participants
Senior political figures attended the meeting. They included Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Sher Afzal Marwat, Liaqat Baloch, and Wasim Akhtar. However, major political parties did not participate. PML-N, PPP, PTI, and TTAP were absent, highlighting continuing political divisions.
Controversial Attendance
Senior PTI leader Barrister Saif attended the event. He previously served as adviser to former KP chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur. His presence raised questions, as PTI leadership had directed members not to attend.
Stakeholders
Intellectuals, journalists, lawyers, and civil society members were also present. They discussed the state of democracy and governance in Pakistan. After the session, the NDC issued a joint declaration.
Confidence-Building Measures
The NDC called for immediate steps to reduce political confrontation. It demanded the appointment of opposition leaders in the Senate and National Assembly. It urged an end to media censorship. It also sought the withdrawal of cases against political figures. The declaration said the release of political workers would build trust and ease tensions.
Negotiation Framework
The NDC proposed the formation of high-powered negotiation teams. Both the government and opposition would create separate committees. These bodies would conduct structured political talks.
It also urged the government to form a top-level committee. The proposed members include the President, the Prime Minister, and Nawaz Sharif.
Once dialogue begins, the NDC plans to consult opposition leaders currently in jail. It will then announce the members of the opposition committee.
Political Freedoms
The declaration called for lifting restrictions on political activity. It emphasized the protection of political rights and parliamentary representation. It urged both sides to stop using state institutions for political purpose.
Release of Political Workers
The NDC demanded the release of detained political workers. It specifically called for the release of women activists, including Bushra Bibi and Yasmin Rashid. The committee said such steps were essential for restoring public confidence.
National Concerns
Participants expressed concern over political instability and economic hardship. They urged all sides to avoid involving the armed forces in politics. They warned against negative propaganda targeting state institutions.
Tribute to Security Forces
The meeting paid tribute to the armed forces, police, Rangers, and other security personnel. Prayers were offered for those who lost their lives fighting terrorism. Participants reaffirmed national unity, sovereignty, and respect for state institutions.
Commitment to Dialogue
The participants agreed to continue the dialogue process. They said the NDC would pursue its mission in the national and public interest.
Background of the NDC
The NDC was formed by former PTI leaders who held key positions during the previous government.
Its founders include Fawad Chaudhry, Imran Ismail, and Mahmood Moulvi. The committee presents itself as a bridge-building platform. Its stated goal is to end prolonged political paralysis.
Internal Party Opposition The initiative has faced resistance within PTI. Hardline party members have publicly distanced themselves from the NDC. PTI’s central information secretary has formally disassociated the party from the committee. Despite this opposition, NDC members continue to push their agenda forward
