Pakistan Shines Globally with Four Medals at International Nuclear Science Olympiad

Students from Pakistan outclass global contenders at INSO-2025, winning Gold, Silver, and two Bronze medals in Malaysia.

In a remarkable and historic achievement, Pakistan’s young science prodigies have brought international acclaim to the country by winning four medals — one Gold, one Silver, and two Bronze — at the 2nd International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO), held in Malaysia from July 30 to August 5, 2025.

The event, conducted under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is a prestigious global competition aimed at promoting awareness, understanding, and innovation in the field of nuclear science and technology. The 2025 edition of the Olympiad featured student teams from 19 countries, including global leaders in science and technology such as China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Türkiye, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

Despite tough competition from some of the most advanced educational systems in Asia and beyond, the Pakistani team stood out with exceptional performance, precision, and creativity. Their achievements not only reflect their own brilliance but also highlight the growing strength of Pakistan’s science education system and institutional support for young talent.

The Pakistani medal-winning team consisted of:

  • Muhammad Tayyab Bukhari – Beaconhouse School, Abbottabad – Gold Medal
  • Ammar Asad Warraich – Siddique Public School, Islamabad – Silver Medal
  • Rawah Javed – Siddique Public School, Islamabad – Bronze Medal
  • Tatheer Aima Naqvi – Chenab College, Jhang – Bronze Medal

The team’s training and selection were managed under the expert supervision of scholars from the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) — one of the country’s top institutions for science and technology — and supported by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). The team was led by Dr. Sajjad Tahir (PIEAS) and Dr. Muhammad Maqsood from the Directorate of Education, PAEC.

The road to INSO was not an easy one. The selected students underwent rigorous academic preparation, multiple mock evaluations, and specialized mentoring in nuclear science topics ranging from atomic structure and radiation to peaceful applications of nuclear technology in medicine, agriculture, and energy. Their win is a culmination of months of hard work and institutional collaboration.

Beyond the medals, this success symbolizes Pakistan’s growing commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. It reinforces the role of PAEC and PIEAS in promoting nuclear science not just at the professional level, but among school-going students as well. Through such platforms, Pakistan continues to encourage young minds to pursue scientific research, critical thinking, and global competitiveness.

This achievement sends a powerful message: Pakistan’s youth is capable, talented, and ready to take on the world. The international spotlight on these students serves as inspiration for thousands across the country, showing that with the right support and passion, global success is within reach.
