Washington aims to repair strained ties after tariff hikes and oil sanctions
WASHINGTON November 5, 2025: US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi remain in regular contact as officials from both countries pursue serious trade discussions, the White House said on Tuesday.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump and Modi “speak pretty frequently,” adding that the president “has great respect for Prime Minister Modi.”
Trade deal discussions underway
Leavitt said trade teams from the two nations were working to overcome lingering disagreements as they explore the possibility of a bilateral trade deal.
“The president and his trade team continue to be in very serious discussions with India,” she said.
The comments come after Trump expressed optimism last week during his visit to South Korea, saying he hoped to finalize a trade deal with India soon a move seen as an effort to rebuild relations following months of tension.
Strained relations over oil and tariffs
US–India relations had hit a low point earlier this year after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50%, criticizing New Delhi for continuing to purchase Russian crude oil despite Western sanctions.
Following the US decision last week to sanction Rosneft and Lukoil two of Moscow’s top energy exporters Indian refiners have reportedly cut their Russian oil imports in compliance with Washington’s restrictions.
Path toward renewed cooperation
Analysts say the renewed dialogue signals a potential thaw between Washington and New Delhi as both sides seek to stabilize trade and strengthen strategic cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
While no deal has been finalized, officials from both governments are expected to meet again in the coming weeks to continue negotiations.
