Sri Lankan team plays first ODI in Rawalpindi under top-tier security cover
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi announced on Tuesday that the Sri Lankan cricket team has been accorded the status of state guests, ensuring the highest level of hospitality and security during their tour of Pakistan.
Speaking to the media after inspecting security arrangements at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi, Naqvi stressed that no compromise would be made on the safety of the visiting team.
“The promotion of sporting activities remains a shared national objective,” Naqvi said, adding that Pakistan is fully committed to hosting international teams in a secure and welcoming environment.
First ODI under way in Rawalpindi
The first One Day International (ODI) between Pakistan and Sri Lanka began at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, with Sri Lanka winning the toss and electing to field first.
Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi said he too would have chosen to bowl first, given the conditions.
“Our focus is on continuing the strong form from the previous series,” Afridi remarked, expressing confidence in his team’s preparations.
Pakistan’s playing XI
Pakistan’s lineup for the opening ODI includes:
Fakhar Zaman, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha, Faheem Ashraf, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Hussain Talat, and Mohammad Nawaz.
Naseem Shah has been brought back into the squad, replacing Abrar Ahmed, as Pakistan looks to maintain bowling depth and balance in the side.
High-level arrangements reflect Pakistan’s progress
The decision to grant state guest status to the Sri Lankan contingent highlights Pakistan’s continued emphasis on reviving international cricket and enhancing sports diplomacy. Security officials confirmed that multi-tiered safety measures have been implemented in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with coordination between law enforcement agencies, the PCB, and local administration.
