42 Umrah Pilgrims Feared Dead in Mecca–Madinah Bus Crash
A devastating accident on the Mecca–Madinah highway early Monday has left at least 42 Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad, India, feared dead after their passenger bus collided with a diesel tanker. The crash occurred at approximately 1:00am Pakistan Standard Time in an area identified as Mufrihat.
Families Among the Victims
The bus was carrying 43 passengers, most of them families who had completed their Umrah in Mecca and were travelling to Madinah. Early reports indicate that a significant number of the victims were women and children. Many passengers were believed to be asleep when the collision took place.
According to initial information, around 20 women and 11 children were among those on board. The crash resulted in a massive fire, making recovery and identification efforts difficult. Local sources have reported 42 fatalities, although officials have not yet issued a confirmed death toll.
One Survivor in Critical Condition
Only one individual is believed to have survived the collision. The survivor has been transported to a hospital, where medical teams are assessing their condition. Rescue workers continue to comb through the wreckage, working to identify the deceased and gather more information.
Cause of the Crash Not Yet Established
Authorities in Saudi Arabia have not yet determined the cause of the accident. Preliminary updates confirm that the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, along with the travel agency responsible for the group, have acknowledged the incident. A formal investigation is underway.
The tragedy has sparked grief among communities in Hyderabad and raised concerns about transportation safety for pilgrims travelling between the holy cities.
