PDMA warns of possible low-level flooding; emergency measures activated across Punjab
Lahore — The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has sounded a flood warning for the Sutlej River and its tributaries after reports suggested that India may discharge water into the river within the next 72 hours. Officials caution that the release, coupled with additional flows from upstream reservoirs, could raise water levels enough to trigger low-level flooding at Ganda Singh Wala and other vulnerable points.
Indian Reservoirs Near Capacity
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that water storage in India’s key dams has increased sharply over the past week due to heavy rains.
- Bhakra Dam is now at 61% capacity
- Pong Dam has reached 76% capacity
- Thein Dam stands at 64% capacity
Such high levels, he explained, make controlled releases into downstream waterways increasingly likely.
District Administrations Put on High Alert
In preparation, the provincial government has placed all relevant officials and district administrations on heightened alert. Commissioners of Lahore, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan, along with deputy commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, have been instructed to closely monitor the situation and ensure readiness for any emergency.
The PDMA, in coordination with the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and the irrigation department, is maintaining continuous surveillance. Emergency control rooms have been directed to operate round the clock, while Rescue 1122 units are on standby for rapid deployment.
Preparedness Across Multiple Departments
Local government bodies, along with agriculture, health, forestry, livestock, and transport departments, have been ordered to activate emergency plans. These include securing critical infrastructure, protecting livestock, and keeping evacuation routes clear.
Public Safety Advisory
Residents have been urged to remain alert, avoid entering rivers, canals, and ponds, and be ready to follow evacuation instructions if necessary. Authorities have stressed the importance of cooperating with emergency personnel during any relocation operations.
For assistance or to report an emergency, citizens can call the PDMA helpline at 1129.
