PR Introduces Modern Railcar Service Promises Revamped Shalimar Express Next

Four daily departures set between Lahore and Rawalpindi with enhanced passenger experience

LAHORE November 4 2025: Pakistan Railways (PR) has launched its newly upgraded Subak Raftar railcar service on the Lahore–Rawalpindi–Lahore route, marking a major step toward modernization and passenger comfort.

The new service was inaugurated at Lahore Railway Station on Monday by Railways Chief Executive Officer Amir Ali Baloch, accompanied by senior PR officials and staff. The upgraded train set, or rake, was flagged off for Rawalpindi in a ceremony attended by passengers and railway employees.

State-of-the-Art Travel Experience

Speaking at the launch, CEO Amir Ali Baloch said the initiative aimed to improve passenger services through modern facilities at stations and onboard trains.

“We are making all-out efforts to provide passengers with comfort and convenience through upgraded trains and better facilities,” he said.

The Subak Raftar railcar now offers four daily departures each from Lahore and Rawalpindi. The fleet currently includes three fully modernized rakes, while a fourth will join the service in the coming days. All upgraded sets are powered by American GEU-20 locomotives for greater reliability and performance.

Facilities and Passenger Comfort

Each rake consists of nine passenger coaches, including four economy-class coaches and five premium coaches — AC standard, AC business, and parlor cars.

Modern amenities include:

  • Hygienic meals and beverages from a recognized food chain served via trolley service
  • Mobile charging ports at every seat
  • Clean and spacious restrooms
  • Enhanced onboard security
  • Dedicated dining room facilities

Mr Baloch emphasized that no road transport operator can match PR’s comfort level and fares, calling the service a value-driven alternative for intercity travel.

Shalimar Express to Follow

The Railways CEO also confirmed that the upgraded Shalimar Express will be launched within the week on the Lahore–Karachi–Lahore (via Faisalabad) route.

“All modern rakes for the Shalimar Express are nearly ready, and the upgraded Karachi Railway Station will also be inaugurated—most likely by the Prime Minister,” he added.

He noted that operations had been delayed due to flood damage on the Faisalabad–Khanewal track, which has now been fully rehabilitated, enabling safe and efficient travel.

Future Upgrades on the Horizon

Pakistan Railways is currently reviewing plans to upgrade more express trains across the network. Once finalized, these trains will be launched one by one under PR’s modernization initiative.

The new railcar service, with its improved design, safety features, and amenities, reflects Pakistan Railways’ commitment to transforming public transport and providing passengers with a world-class travel experience.
