Premier says government open to dialogue for political stability but will not compromise on rule of law
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday conditionally accepted the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) proposal for dialogue, stating that the government is ready to engage if the opposition demonstrates seriousness and a genuine commitment to political stability.
Addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister said dialogue remained essential for national cohesion and recalled that the government had previously extended invitations for talks.
No Blackmail in the Name of Dialogue
While reaffirming openness to political engagement, PM Shehbaz made it clear that the government would not entertain illegal demands or pressure tactics under the guise of negotiations.
“Dialogue is welcome for stability, but blackmail in the name of talks will not be accepted,” he said.
He emphasized that political engagement must strengthen democracy rather than undermine constitutional and legal frameworks.
Focus on Economic Strength and Reforms
The prime minister stressed that all political and economic initiatives should serve national interests, highlighting the importance of reforms aimed at stabilizing and strengthening the economy.
Welcoming the launch of the privatization process of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), PM Shehbaz described it as a significant milestone in economic reform.
He assured that the highest bidder would be selected transparently, reaffirming the government’s commitment to openness and accountability.
Cabinet Reviews National Situation
During the meeting, the cabinet reviewed the economic, political and security landscape of the country. Members expressed satisfaction over prevailing conditions and reiterated their collective resolve to pursue development and stability.
The prime minister also expressed satisfaction over the stabilization of foreign exchange reserves, with cabinet members terming the improvement a positive signal for economic confidence and fiscal discipline.
Governance Decisions Ratified
The cabinet formally ratified decisions taken by various cabinet committees, with officials stating that the approvals were part of ongoing governance measures to ensure continuity in policymaking.
