Punjab Issues Over Two Million Driving Licenses in Record 18 Days

Online Licensing Portal Drives Massive Uptake

LAHORE:
Punjab has set a new national benchmark by issuing more than two million driving licenses within just 18 days, following special directives issued by the Chief Minister of Punjab, officials confirmed.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Traffic Police, the province issued over 940,000 learner permits, while more than 360,000 citizens received fresh regular driving licenses during the record period.

In addition to new issuances, over 700,000 licenses were renewed, including learner, regular, and international driving permits. Authorities also reissued more than 7,000 lost licenses, ensuring continuity for motorists who had misplaced their documents.

Digital Licensing Plays Key Role

Officials credited the success largely to Punjab’s online, home-based licensing portal, which saw massive public engagement. Data shows that approximately 1.14 million applicants used the digital platform to apply for new licenses or renew existing ones, significantly reducing pressure on physical service centres.

The province also issued over 2,000 international driving permits, reflecting growing demand from overseas travelers and expatriates.

Enforcement and Road Safety

DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir emphasized that driving without a valid license remains a punishable offence. He warned that violators will face strict legal action and heavy fines under traffic laws.

He noted that the expansion of licensed and trained drivers has contributed to a noticeable decline in traffic accidents across the province, linking enforcement and education with improved road safety outcomes.

Public Advisory

Traffic authorities said awareness campaigns are ongoing to encourage citizens to obtain valid licenses through official channels. Motorists were urged to use licensing centres, service delivery facilities, or the online portal for convenience.

The DIG also advised drivers to download their e-driving license, clarifying that it carries the same legal validity as the physical card and can be presented during checks.
