Water rationing in Rawalpindi starts Jan 1, 2026
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi has announced a 50% reduction in water supply from Rawal Dam for 11 days, starting January 1, as part of scheduled cleaning and repair works on the dam’s canals.
WASA Managing Director Saleem Ashraf stated that the reduced supply will affect several areas of the city while alternative water sources will continue to operate to meet essential needs.
Areas Affected
Localities impacted by the cut include:
- Committee Chowk
- Raja Bazaar
- Purana Qila
- Mohanpura
- Bagh Sardaran
- Dhoke Mangtal
- Arya Mohalla
- Other surrounding neighborhoods
Note: Water supply from Khanpur Dam and tube wells in these areas will continue as usual.
Schedule of Canal Maintenance
According to a joint meeting between the Small Dam Organisation and WASA, the repair and cleaning schedule is as follows:
- Main Canal: January 1–3
- Right and Left Bank Canals: January 3–11
During this period, the raw water supply from Rawal Dam will remain reduced by 50%, which may cause partial shortages across the city.
Alternative Arrangements by WASA
WASA is making arrangements to minimize the impact of the water cut:
- Additional water will be supplied from Khanpur Dam, tube wells, and water bowsers.
- Mini filtration plants across the city will ensure the availability of clean drinking water.
- Tube wells will be repaired urgently, and consumer complaints will be addressed immediately.
Managing Director Saleem Ashraf emphasized strict measures against water wastage and instructed staff to maintain uninterrupted supply from alternative sources.
Public Advisory
Citizens are urged to use water responsibly during the 11-day period:
- Avoid using water for washing floors, vehicles, motorcycles, lawns, and gardens.
- Do not leave taps open in homes or commercial spaces.
- Prioritize water use for drinking, cooking, and essential domestic needs to ensure fair distribution.
WASA assured that the cleaning and maintenance work will be completed on schedule, and normal water supply from Rawal Dam will resume after January 11.
